Past Future Tense

WOULD

Past Future is used to say an activity or situation that would happen in the past. It’s use is the same as Present Future (WILL/BE GOING TO), The difference is that Past Future talks about something in the past.

Notice the difference between Present Future Vs Past Future

PRESENT FUTURE
PAST FUTURE
Jason will cook the dinner
I knew Jason would cook the dinner
I’m quite sure that Jane is going to come to the party
I told you Jane was going to come to the party
We are going to go to the movie tonight
We were going to go the movie last night but it rained heavily

WOULD vs BE GOING TO (past form)
In order to say about prediction we can use either would or be going to
When I looked at the cloud I knew it would rain soon.
When I looked at the cloud I knew it was going to rain soon.
I was quite sure they would help you.
I was quite sure they were going to help you.

In order to express willingness we use would. We decide to do something at the time of speaking, there is no advance plan:
He said that he would buy some snacks.
When Andrew asked me to go out last night, I would say yes but I remember that I hadn’t done my homework.
I would text you asking about the homework when you phoned me.

In order to express something that has been planned before, we use be going to:
a.       John and I had decided to leave the school. We were going to get a job.
b.      Sarah bought a new blazer. She said she was going to have a job interview.
c.       I was going to buy a dictionary before my mother told me that she already bought me one.

The negative form is:
WOULD + NOT  /  BE + NOT + GOING TO

-     He said that he would not buy some snacks.
-     When Andrew asked me to go out last night, I wouldn’t say yes.
-     I wouldn’t text you asking about the homework. Because I already knew.
-     John and I had decided to leave the school. We were not going to continue our study.
-     Sarah had a nice blazer. She said she was not going to buy a new one.
